Custom Made Orthotics

Custom orthotics are medical devices prescribed by a foot and ankle surgeon. These are different from shoe inserts and arch supports which are typically over-the-counter prefabricated devices. Custom orthotics are made based on custom molds of your feet while holding them in a corrected or neutral position, and thus are personalized prescription devices. Think of them as glasses for your feet. They have two basic functions: orthotics can be used to accommodate or offload a prominent area, as well as help the foot function better. Orthotics are especially helpful in realigning the feet of people with too-high or too-low arches, and can relieve the associated conditions that happen with these foot-types such as plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, and arthritis.

Making custom orthotics is very technically demanding, in that it is very important how the foot shape, or mold is captured, so that the laboratory that makes the devices can make them properly fit and accomodate your feet. Proper orthotics can often help delay or limit the need for surgery with some conditions.

The staff at San Diego Podiatry Group have all been specially trained to make the best custom orthotics available. These devices will typically last for a minimum of 7-10 years before needing replacement. Insurance companies sometimes will cover all or a portion of the cost. Contact the office today for a consultation to see if custom orthotics are right for you.
